AbstractMesopause Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) concentrations are simultaneously observed by a dual beam Na-K LIDAR deployed at São José Dos Campos (23.1°S, 45.9°W) owing to the Cooperative Agreement between NSSC and INPE. Recent works revealed that even being Na and K both alkali metals, their layers morphology and also sporadic layers (Ns) show different behavior. Likewise, they present different statistics variability of their parameters, which keep an open question about their source mechanism. The main objective of this research is to present a method to classify Ns layers according to their main characteristics. We concentrate our study in 100 simultaneous Ns layers and propose 6 different ways of classification. According to its peak height a layer can be classified into high or low, in case the peak height is above or below the layer centroid, respectively. Regarding the phase propagation velocity, they can be ascending, descending or stationary. Looking to the evolution of layer width Ns can be classified into broadening or narrowing ones. Another parameter of classification is the strength of the layer, which is the ratio between the peak density and the background density at that height. In this sense Ns can be classified as weak, with strength less than 3; moderate, with strength factor between 3 and 4; and strong when strength factor is higher than 4. The duration time is also used as key point for separating Ns layers into Fast, Slow and Intermediate. In addition, several Ns layers occur simultaneously with peculiar structures such as C-type, KelvinHelmholtz instability among others, which can indicate some formation mechanism. This work will improve our knowledge for better understanding of the different process that occurs in the development and disruption of the Ns layers.
